John specializes in composition and research relating to the pipe organ, and holds a PhD in Composition from City St George’s, University of London, where he was supervised by Newton Armstrong. The focus of his doctoral work was on how elements from late Renaissance and Baroque organ repertoire can be used as critical and narrative devices in new music to explore the formation and perception of canon and instrument. John has had a lifelong interest in the organ, and after starting lessons while a chorister, spent a couple of summers working as an organ builder during college. Having read Music at the University of Oxford, where he was also an organ scholar, John then completed an MSc in Global Politics at Durham University. John is currently writing a book for Routledge’s Research in Music series, titled The Contemporary Pipe Organ: Compositional and Creative Practice, in which he discusses recent organ works by twenty living composers from around the world.
